Warner Bros. and HBO have announced the first six cast members who will portray iconic Hogwarts professors in the upcoming Harry Potter television series.
The official casting news was unveiled today, putting an end to months of speculation about how this new adaptation will present the beloved story of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The confirmed roster features John Lithgow (Conclave, Dexter), who had previously revealed he would be playing Albus Dumbledore, alongside other actors whose involvement has been the subject of intense rumor and fan discussion.
Two names that will come as little surprise to fans are Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), cast as the gentle giant Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, Black Mirror), who will take on the complex role of Potions Master Severus Snape. They are joined by Janet McTeer (Me Before You, The Menu) as the stern but caring Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon (The Favourite, Present Laughter) as the nervous Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show, Alice Through the Looking Glass) as the grumpy caretaker Argus Filch.

“We are thrilled to welcome this incredible ensemble of actors, and we look forward to seeing them breathe new life into these cherished characters,” said showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and director/executive producer Mark Mylod in a joint statement.
Professors Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Snape are not just pillars of the Harry Potter world but iconic figures in popular culture. Each actor faces the significant challenge of following in the footsteps of previous performers. John Lithgow acknowledged this weight when confirming his casting earlier this year.
“I received the call while at the Sundance Film Festival for another project, and it was a difficult decision because this role will likely define the final chapter of my career,” he told ScreenRant in February. “I am tremendously excited. Some truly wonderful creatives are revisiting Harry Potter, which made the choice so hard. I’ll be around 87 by the time we wrap, but I’ve given my enthusiastic yes.”

The Harry Potter series does not yet have a confirmed release date, but production is expected to commence shortly. Details remain scarce on how the show will differentiate itself from the original book series and the blockbuster film adaptations released in the 2000s and early 2010s. Warner Bros. has stated the series will allow for a deeper exploration of Harry's story than a feature film could. Controversial author J.K. Rowling is involved as an executive producer on the project.
