Harry Potter Mobile Game Disenchants: Announces EOS

NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania on October 29th, 2024. While the game will continue to operate in Asia and select MENA regions, this regional end-of-service (EOS) announcement marks the end of an era for many players.

Initially released in China in September 2021 and globally on June 27th, 2023, the game enjoyed a promising start. However, post-launch momentum faltered, leading to this decision.

The game's blend of Clash Royale-style gameplay and the Harry Potter universe initially captivated players. The card-battling mechanics and wizard duels successfully evoked the Hogwarts atmosphere.

But the game's popularity waned. Player complaints on Reddit cite a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics as a major contributing factor. Reworks to the reward system negatively impacted skilled free-to-play players, slowing progression and discouraging continued engagement.

The game has already been removed from app stores in the affected regions. Those in unaffected regions can still experience the game's dorm life, classes, secrets, and student duels. But the clock is ticking.
