James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, is known for frequently casting his friends in his films. Now, an actress from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy confirms discussions with Gunn about a role in the upcoming DC Universe.
The DCU aims to create a successful shared universe, unlike the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which suffered from studio interference and inconsistent vision. While the DCEU had some box office successes, it also faced financial setbacks and a lack of overall cohesion. Warner Bros. hopes Gunn, renowned for the Guardians of the Galaxy films, can steer the DCU clear of these pitfalls, potentially bringing familiar faces along.
According to Agents of Fandom, Pom Klementieff, who played Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy, revealed ongoing conversations with Gunn about a DCU role. At San Antonio's Superhero Comic Con, when asked which DC character she'd like to play, Klementieff responded, "Do you really think I’m going to answer this question?” While she remained tight-lipped about specifics, she confirmed Gunn has a particular character in mind for her.
Gunn's practice of casting familiar faces, including his brother and wife, has drawn criticism from some. Others argue this is a common practice among filmmakers. Ultimately, whether Klementieff is the right fit for the role remains to be seen.
The Guardians of the Galaxy films are streaming on Disney+.
