"New Director Chosen for Live-Action Street Fighter Film"

A new Street Fighter movie has selected its challenger, I mean, director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai, known for his work as a writer, director, and executive producer on the absurd comedy show The Eric Andre Show, will helm a new film adaptation of Street Fighter for Legendary Entertainment.

Capcom is said to be "deeply involved" with the adaptation, and the movie has already been slated for a release on March 20, 2026.

PlayThis will mark the latest attempt at bringing *Street Fighter* to the big screen. Fans may fondly remember the 1994 film, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. Though it received mixed reviews from critics at the time, it has since become a cult classic.

While casting details have yet to be announced, fans can expect to see some of their favorite Street Fighter characters on the big screen.

Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for Talk to Me, but they left the project last summer. The selection of Sakurai, an alum of The Eric Andre Show, suggests that Legendary may be steering the film towards a more absurdist tone. As a fan of the game's more whimsical elements, I'm thrilled at the prospect of this new direction.

In the meantime, fans can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more insights, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review [ttpp].
