The Blood of Dawnwalker's official game reveal event on January 16th unveiled a wealth of details about this narrative-driven, open-world dark fantasy action-RPG. Players will embody Coen, the Dawnwalker protagonist, navigating a life that straddles day and night in the fictional 14th-century Medieval European land of Vale Sangora. Narrative director Jakub Szamalek described Coen as an atypical protagonist, noting, "He’s a young guy who at heart is emotional, he can get vulnerable, he’s honest about how he feels." The trailer introduces Coen's confrontation with the antagonist, Brencis, an ancient vampire who has usurped control of Vale Sangora. In this crumbling world, Coen's mission is to save his family within a tight 30-day and 30-night timeframe, though the game's time flow allows for extensive gameplay.

The reveal trailer showcases Coen's superhuman abilities, such as sliding down buildings unscathed and phasing between enemies, hinting at his vampiric nature. He also wields magic, casting missiles at will. Despite the game being in its early stages, fans have many unanswered questions.

Rebel Wolves addressed some of these queries on their official Discord server, where a FAQ channel was established post-reveal. Dawnwalkers, as explained, appear human by day but transform into vampires at night. However, they are not merely hybrids; they represent a unique entity. The game's magic system is grounded in the occult, focusing on rituals, amulets, relics, and summonings rather than typical fantasy elements like fireballs or lightning bolts.

A Narrative Sandbox Experience With Lots Of People To Meet

Coen, afflicted with silver poisoning, is on a quest to save his family from doom. Yet, the developers emphasize that The Blood of Dawnwalker will offer a "narrative sandbox" experience, granting players significant control over the storyline. The game promises "maximum emphasis on player's agency and freedom to explore storylines with one clear goal but many, many ways to achieve it." This nonlinear approach means the world will evolve based on player choices.

To maintain the integrity of this single-player campaign, there will be no multiplayer or co-op modes. However, Coen will encounter a diverse array of characters, including uriashi, kobolds, and possibly werewolves, some of whom can be romanced.

Rebel Wolves, founded by former CD Projekt Red developers who worked on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, has not yet announced a release date for The Blood of Dawnwalker. The game is confirmed to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
