Gaming hardware giant ASUS has recently teased what could be an Xbox-branded handheld device, stirring excitement among gaming enthusiasts. The ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) X/Twitter account shared a tantalizing teaser featuring their "little robot friend cooking something up," alongside a glimpse of an ROG Xbox controller and a handheld system.
This tease comes on the heels of a report by IGN last month, which discussed Microsoft's ambitious plans for gaming hardware. The report highlighted the development of a next-gen Xbox slated for release in 2027, and an Xbox-branded handheld device that might hit the market later in 2025.
The ASUS teaser provides a clear view of the handheld's buttons, which are configured in the iconic Xbox layout (Y, B, A, and X), as opposed to the layouts used by PlayStation and Nintendo. The device also features a D-pad, two thumbsticks, and four additional smaller buttons, though these are less discernible in the teaser.
Adding fuel to the speculation, the official Xbox account responded to the teaser with a playful wide-eyed gif, hinting at an imminent reveal.

While a specific reveal date remains under wraps, the monitor in the teaser displays phrases like "Marathon stamina, more capacity, faster speeds" and "fresh look!" These suggest the handheld's potential unique selling points.
In January, Microsoft's VP of 'Next Generation,' Jason Ronald, shared with The Verge the company's vision to merge Xbox and Windows experiences for PC gaming handhelds manufactured by OEMs such as ASUS, Lenovo, and Razer.
While this Xbox-branded handheld is not a Microsoft-made console, rumors suggest that Microsoft plans to launch its own first-party Xbox handheld in the future. Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer has indicated that such a device is still years away.
Simultaneously, the successor to the Xbox Series X is reportedly in full production and expected to launch in 2027. This aligns with Xbox president Sarah Bond's recent statement about Microsoft's commitment to advancing their next-generation hardware significantly.
Amidst these developments, there's ongoing debate about the future of gaming consoles. Netflix's President of Games, Alain Tascan, recently suggested a shift away from traditional consoles, despite major companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo continuing to innovate. Nintendo, in particular, is gearing up to reveal details about its highly anticipated Switch 2 during a Nintendo Direct on April 2. Fans are eager to learn about the Switch 2's features, its release date, and pre-order information.
