Netflix's animated Devil May Cry adaptation may not have been your favorite recent series, but creator Adi Shankar recently hinted that Season 2 will significantly diverge from its predecessor - suggesting even skeptics might want to give the show another chance.

"Season 2 is a dramatically different show. Yes, Dante evolves," the Dredd producer responded to a fan on June 23. "His combat skills sharpen, showcasing more of the signature prowess fans expect from the games. However, compelling storytelling remains key - true character development involves growth, not just victories. What makes Dante fascinating isn't invincibility, but his capacity to learn and become stronger."

Some critical fans voiced dissatisfaction with the Capcom-based adaptation's direction, offering specific critiques regarding character development.

"Growth mechanics matter as much as growth itself," one fan countered. "Viewers don't object to Dante's gradual development - they critique the fundamental misinterpretation of his character arc. The same applies to Lady's journey."

Shankar emphasizes his adaptation's creative liberties, noting its non-canonical status allows narrative flexibility: "Every franchise requires unique handling. With Devil May Cry's already complex multigame/manga continuity, establishing an alternate universe let me capture the essence while avoiding timeline constraints," he explained.

While Season 2 lacks a premiere date, Netflix confirmed renewal in April. IGN's Season 1 review (8/10) praised it as "an entertaining, if formulaic, game adaptation featuring some of 2025's strongest animated sequences."
