The director of *Fallout: New Vegas*, Josh Sawyer, along with several other developers from the *Fallout* series, have expressed a keen interest in working on a new entry in the beloved franchise, but their enthusiasm comes with a significant condition: creative freedom.
Fallout Devs Said They’d Be Willing To Work On New Series Entry
But It Depends On If They Can Do Something New
In a recent episode of his Q&A series on YouTube, Josh Sawyer made it clear that he would be thrilled to develop another *Fallout* game, provided he is given the creative leeway to explore new ideas. "Any project has to do with 'what are we doing, what are the boundaries, what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?'" Sawyer stated. He further elaborated that overly restrictive constraints would make the project unappealing, as it would hinder his ability to explore the aspects he's passionate about.
Echoing Sawyer's sentiments, other *Fallout* developers have also shown interest in returning to the series. Last year, *Fallout* co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed their willingness to work on a remaster of *Fallout: New Vegas*. In an interview with The Gamer, Cain emphasized that his return would depend on the level of creativity he's allowed. "Every RPG I've ever made offered me something new and different that got me interested in making it," Cain said. He added that his interest in a new *Fallout* game would hinge on what new elements it could bring to the table, questioning, "If someone came to me and said, 'You want to make a *Fallout* game?' My answer is 'Well, what's new?' I didn't even want to make *Fallout 2*, why would I want to make a new *Fallout*? What's different about it?"
Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart has also voiced his desire to work on another *Fallout* game, should the opportunity arise. However, in an interview with Game Pressure from January last year, Urquhart clarified that a new *Fallout* game was not currently in development. "We’re not working on *Fallout*, and we haven’t even talked about what it would be," he stated. He noted that Obsidian's current focus is on other projects like *Avowed*, *Grounded*, and *Outer Worlds 2*. Urquhart mentioned that discussions about new games might start towards the end of 2023, but he remains hopeful about returning to the *Fallout* series before retiring. "I would love to make another *Fallout* before I retire. I don’t know when that is, I don’t have a date of my retirement. It’s funny, you can say I’m already 52, or only 52. It’s one of those two, depending on the day. My hope is that’ll happen, but we’ll have to wait and see," he concluded.
