Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

Author: Caleb Feb 25,2025

Securing your shelter in the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid requires more than just finding a suitable location; it demands robust defenses. This guide focuses on a fundamental yet effective method: barricading windows.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To effectively board up windows, you'll need specific items: a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once gathered, right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Resource Locations: Hammers and nails are typically found in toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Wooden planks are commonly located at construction sites, or can be salvaged by dismantling wooden furniture (shelves, chairs, etc.). Administrators can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn items.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie entry. The more planks applied, the greater the resistance. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove," requiring a claw hammer or crowbar.

Note: Large furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators) are ineffective as barricades; characters and zombies will pass through them. However, moving furniture remains a useful skill for interior arrangement.

More durable barricades can be constructed using metal bars or sheets, but this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
