The Pokémon GO Tour Pass: A Free and Paid Option Explained

With Niantic's frequent introduction of in-game passes and tickets, the cost is often the first question on players' minds. The new Pokémon GO Tour Pass, however, is a surprising free addition, but what exactly does it offer?

Understanding the Pokémon GO Tour Pass

Introduced with the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova global event, the Tour Pass is a system of completing tasks to earn Tour Points. These points unlock rewards, boost your rank, and enhance event bonuses during the Unova event.

The standard Tour Pass is free and automatically granted to players starting February 24th at 10 AM local time. A premium version, the Tour Pass Deluxe ($14.99 USD or equivalent), offers an immediate Victini encounter, improved rewards, and faster progression through the ranks.

Earning and Utilizing Tour Points

Tour Points are earned through familiar in-game activities: catching Pokémon, completing raids, and hatching eggs. Daily Pass Tasks provide additional points.

Accumulating Tour Points unlocks rewards, increases your rank, and grants Catch XP bonuses. Rank increases unlock various rewards, including Pokémon encounters, Candy, Poké Balls, and more. The Catch XP bonus increases as follows:

  • 1.5x Catch XP at Tier 2
  • 2x Catch XP at Tier 3
  • 3x Catch XP at Tier 4

While Niantic has not revealed all rewards, the free Tour Pass culminates in a Zorua encounter with a unique background. The Tour Pass Deluxe offers a different final reward: a Lucky Trinket.

Decoding the Lucky Trinket

The Lucky Trinket, a reward exclusive to the Tour Pass Deluxe, is a single-use item transforming a friend into a Lucky Friend. This allows a Lucky Pokémon trade without requiring Best Friend status (Great Friends are required to use the item). Note that Lucky Trinkets earned during GO Tour: Unova expire on March 9, 2025.

Pokémon GO is available now.
