PGA Tour 2K25: Final Game Preview

If you polled golf game fans about which pro sports series they'd most like to see 2K tackle next, a NFL 2K revival would likely top the list. Even pro golf might not be a close second (looking at you, MLB and NHL). Yet, 2K is back for a third swing with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, there's much to appreciate.

HB Studios has been refining its golf game for a decade, starting with The Golf Club before partnering with 2K and launching the PGA Tour 2K series in 2020. That experience shows in 2K25. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking some real-world courses (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is genuinely enjoyable. Minor issues like occasional framerate hiccups on PC (especially when surveying holes) were easily overlooked.

PlayThe upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick option (pull down to wind up, press forward to strike) is intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving and challenging experiences, adjusting the sensitivity to your inputs. A simpler "Perfect Swing" mode offers a more relaxed experience. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee position adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics and the option to laterally adjust your tee shot based on obstacles enhance the gameplay. Starting with Tiger Woods, this year's cover athlete, certainly helped ease the learning curve.

MyCareer mode incorporates engaging narrative elements, similar to other sports titles. I even received a movie offer alongside Christopher "Shooter McGavin" McDonald (present in the game, though not as his Happy Gilmore persona). Choosing a heroic or villainous path impacts stat boosts, alongside gear upgrades purchased with VC. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (e.g., achieving 10 birdies in a row) provides ongoing goals.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator allows for detailed character customization, complemented by skill trees. While multiplayer wasn't tested, the promise of ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies (clubs) sounds appealing, echoing the social aspect of classic golf games. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent execution without any major flaws. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it appears to be a solid and enjoyable game for golf enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. A playable demo is currently available.
