MultiVersus Shuts Down, Fans Mourn Beloved Game

Author: Ethan Nov 07,2025

MultiVersus, the free-to-play crossover fighting game launched in 2024, is set to shut down permanently soon.

Player First Games revealed back in January that Season 5 would be MultiVersus' last, with servers closing permanently at 5 PM PDT (12 PM EDT) on May 30, 2025. Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly considered the game a significant failure, admitting during a November 2024 earnings call that MultiVersus severely underperformed, leading to a $100 million write-down for their gaming division. This loss compounded the $300 million deficit already incurred after the underwhelming launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League earlier that January.

Merely a month later, Warner Bros. canceled its Wonder Woman title and shuttered three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and Player First Games, MultiVersus' developer.

In a farewell thread titled "Multiversus shuts down tomorrow—share your final thoughts," hundreds of players reminisced about their favorite memories.

"MultiVersus was revolutionary—a team-focused platform fighter with lightning-fast combat and incredible synergy," wrote one fan. "Beyond gameplay, the voice casting was stellar, with actors like Kevin Conroy returning as Batman and Matthew Lillard as Shaggy. The character interactions, mid-match and post-fight, added so much charm."

"Some roster picks were puzzling (Ultra Instinct Shaggy? Banana Guard?), but most movesets were brilliantly designed. There's truly nothing else like MultiVersus."

"Nothing topped that beta euphoria in 2022—I was addicted to its breakneck pace," another player recalled. "Played it nonstop while sick. Here's hoping for a revival someday, maybe as a sequel."

"This game means as much to me as PlayStation All-Stars," posted one nostalgic fan, while another noted: "Tom & Jerry's fighter design reignited my love for the genre—ingenious and endlessly fun."

A few cling to hope, though most acknowledge revival challenges—especially given the licensing labyrinth involved. Still, preservation efforts persist ahead of server shutdown.

"While not a party essential, MultiVersus delivered fresh, team-based combat that stood out online," we praised in IGN's 8/10 review.
