NetEase Games is making significant changes to the post-launch roadmap for Marvel Rivals, aiming to keep the game fresh and exciting for its player base. The company has announced plans to shorten the length of seasons from three months to two, ensuring that new content arrives more frequently. This adjustment includes a commitment to introduce at least one new hero every month, starting with Season 3.
The changes were highlighted in the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, where the creative director, Guangyun Chen, shared insights into the game's future. Season 2, set to launch on April 11, will introduce Emma Frost as the new Vanguard, followed by Ultron mid-season. These additions are designed to keep the gameplay dynamic and engaging, but the real shift in how heroes impact matches will begin with Season 3.
Chen emphasized the team's dedication to maintaining the thrill that Marvel Rivals experienced at launch. "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all," he stated. He acknowledged the pressure from social media discussions and the desire to keep the game as exciting as it was in its opening months. The goal is to fulfill players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes through new modes and a diverse roster of characters.
Just hours before this announcement, NetEase unveiled details about Marvel Rivals Season 2, which will shift its theme from a vampire takeover to the Hellfire Gala. This new storyline promises new outfits, maps, and characters, with further details to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Marvel Rivals launched to great success in December, quickly amassing 10 million players within three days. Available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, the game saw a peak of 480,990 concurrent players on Steam at launch. Season 1 in January further boosted its popularity, reaching 644,269 concurrent players, making it the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform.
Despite a slight decline in concurrent players since its peak, Marvel Rivals remains a top contender on Steam. The upcoming Season 2 and the planned changes for Season 3 are expected to reinvigorate the player base.
