Smash Together, an unofficial dating app created to connect like-minded Super Smash Bros. players, says it received a cease-and-desist letter just before its open beta launch.
The app was scheduled to begin open beta testing today, May 15, following several months of development. However, on May 13, the official account shared a sad Yoshi meme with the caption: "We got cease and desisted." (Thanks, Automaton, for spotting this.)

The developers haven't confirmed who issued the cease-and-desist, though the likely party is Nintendo, given the app's Smash Bros. dating theme.
Smash Together promoted itself as "the premium dating platform for Super Smash Bros. fans of all kinds," offering a matchmaking system designed to help users find their "ideal Doubles partner—both in and out of the game."
App screenshots revealed profile sections for listing a player's main character, notable victories, and conversation prompts adapted from typical dating apps—but with a Smash Bros. spin. Examples include, "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major."
Beyond potential IP and copyright violations, the very concept of a dating app based on Smash Bros. likely contributed to the decision to issue the cease-and-desist.
So far, the Smash Together team hasn't indicated whether they'll pursue a modified version of the app without the Smash Bros. branding. Until then, please note the admirable restraint shown in this article—no "smashing" jokes included.
