Mastering the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide
Nothing is more satisfying in an action RPG than perfectly timing a parry, turning an enemy's attack into an opportunity for a devastating counter. This guide details how to parry in Avowed.
Unlocking the Parry Ability
Parrying isn't available from the start. To unlock it:
- Access the in-game menu and navigate to the "Abilities" screen.
- Select the "Ranger" tab.
- Locate the Parry ability (typically in the top-middle column).
- Allocate an ability point to any of the three core ability trees to unlock Parry.
Parry has three ranks:
Rank | Player Level Requirement | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | N/A (1 Point Spent) | Unlocks the Parry ability. |
2 | Player Level 5 | Increases parry efficiency by 25%, enhancing stun. |
3 | Player Level 8 | Increases parry efficiency by 50%, enhancing stun. |
At level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability unlocks, allowing you to parry projectiles.
Executing a Parry
Parrying requires precise timing. Block immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue confirm a successful parry, staggering your opponent. Timing varies slightly between enemies; practice is key. It's less demanding than in titles like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Limitations of Parrying
Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle must be dodged. Furthermore, only melee weapons (one-handed, two-handed, or a shield in your off-hand) can parry. Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.
Benefits and Considerations
Parrying stuns attackers, creating openings for significant damage. It's ideal for melee builds focusing on close-quarters combat. Ranged characters may find it less useful. Avowed's respec system allows easy removal of the Parry ability if needed.
