Outer Worlds 2 Progressing Smoothly Amid Busy Development Period at Obsidian Entertainment

Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart recently provided an update on the development of The Outer Worlds 2 and their upcoming fantasy RPG, Avowed. Development on the highly anticipated Outer Worlds sequel is progressing well, despite challenges faced by the studio.

Obsidian Entertainment Confident in Upcoming Releases

Urquhart shared positive news about The Outer Worlds 2, stating that development is "going really well." He praised the dedicated team, many of whom worked on the original title, highlighting their experience and understanding of the game's vision.

However, Urquhart acknowledged significant hurdles the studio navigated, particularly the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the integration following Microsoft's acquisition. Simultaneously developing multiple titles, including Grounded and Pentiment, significantly stretched the team's resources. He candidly admitted a period of intense pressure, stating, "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half." At one point, the studio considered halting The Outer Worlds 2 development to focus solely on Avowed. Ultimately, they chose to persevere with all projects.

Urquhart recounted the challenges of navigating acquisition, pandemic pressures, and the simultaneous development of Outer Worlds, its DLC, Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, Grounded, and Pentiment.

Despite these obstacles, Urquhart expressed pride in the outcomes, noting the success of Grounded and Pentiment. He further confirmed that Avowed is "looking great," and The Outer Worlds 2 is "looking incredible." While specific game details remain undisclosed, the recent delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other projects.

Announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates since its reveal. Urquhart acknowledged this and the possibility of a launch delay, similar to Avowed. However, he reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to delivering high-quality games, stating, "We will get there with all these games… Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we’re going to get there, and I think that’s been proven now." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
