Marvel Rivals' Popularity Shadowed by Bot Concerns

Despite topping Steam and Twitch charts, Marvel Rivals, NetEase Games' hero shooter, faces growing player suspicion regarding the prevalence of bots in its matches. The game, launched in December to widespread acclaim for its style and use of iconic Marvel characters, boasts a large player base. However, weeks of discussion on social media platforms like Reddit highlight concerns about AI opponents appearing in standard Quickplay matches.

Players report encountering matches where opponents and even teammates exhibit suspiciously low skill levels and repetitive behaviors. Common observations include similarly structured names (often single words in all caps, or combinations of full and half names), and enemy profiles labeled "restricted." The suspicion is that these are bots designed to ease players back into the game after a string of losses, preventing frustration and reducing queue times.

NetEase has yet to publicly address these concerns, fueling speculation. While practice modes clearly indicate AI opponents, the presence of bots in Quickplay matches remains unconfirmed. The lack of transparency frustrates players who find it difficult to gauge their actual skill improvement when facing potentially weaker AI opponents. The inability to distinguish between human and AI opponents in Quickplay is a central point of contention.

The use of bots in online games is not new, but the opaque implementation in Marvel Rivals has sparked debate. Players propose various solutions, ranging from an option to toggle bot matches on or off to the complete removal of bots from Quickplay. Some players even utilize these suspected bot matches to complete specific hero achievements.

The author confirms encountering a suspicious Quickplay match exhibiting several of the reported red flags, including unusual player movement and restricted profiles. NetEase has been contacted for comment.

Despite this controversy, NetEase's plans for Marvel Rivals in 2025 remain ambitious, including the introduction of the Fantastic Four and a new hero every half-season. A new Spider-Man skin is also anticipated later this month. While the bot issue remains unresolved, the game's future development continues apace. Further investigation into how players are using the Invisible Woman to counter suspected bots is also available.
