Call of Duty has unveiled exciting new features for the upcoming release of Black Ops 6, set to launch on October 25. With the game also debuting on Game Pass on day one, industry analysts are forecasting the impact this could have on Xbox's subscription service.
Black Ops 6 Update Adds Arachnophobia Mode and New Accessibility Features
Arachnophobia Mode Transforms Spider Zombies into Legless, Floating Creatures
In anticipation of the official release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the developers have introduced an innovative arachnophobia toggle feature within the game's Zombies mode. This setting allows players to modify the appearance of spider-like enemies, making them more palatable for those with a fear of spiders, while maintaining the core gameplay experience.
When activated, the arachnophobia mode results in significant aesthetic alterations. As seen in the screenshot above, the spider zombies become legless, appearing to float eerily in the air. While this transformation may seem less intimidating, it raises questions about gameplay mechanics, such as whether the hitbox of these altered enemies adjusts accordingly. Although the developers have not provided detailed information on this aspect, it's reasonable to assume that the hitbox might scale down to match the new appearance in this shooter game.
Additionally, Black Ops 6 Zombies will feature a "Pause and Save" option, enabling solo players to pause, save, and resume their games while at full health. With the reintroduction of the "Round-Based" mode in Zombies, this feature is poised to significantly enhance gameplay. The developers emphasize that the ability to pause and save can be a game-changer, especially considering the demanding nature of Round-Based maps that require players to restart from the beginning upon death.
Black Ops 6 Could Attract an Additional 2.5 Million Players to Game Pass
Black Ops 6's Day One Launch on Game Pass: A Double-Edged Sword
As Black Ops 6 gears up for its launch, industry analysts predict a substantial boost in Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Microsoft's strategy to include this eagerly awaited title in its gaming subscription service from day one is expected to draw millions of new users. Analyst Michael Pachter told GamesIndustry.biz that the inclusion of Black Ops 6 in Game Pass could attract between three to four million new subscribers.
However, analyst Piers Harding-Rolls suggests a more conservative estimate, predicting a 10% increase in Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, which translates to approximately 2.5 million new users. He notes that many of these new subscribers might be existing users upgrading from Game Pass Core and Game Pass Standard to Game Pass Ultimate to enjoy Call of Duty.
Dr. Serkan Toto from Katan Games emphasized the high stakes for Xbox, stating that Microsoft's gaming division has not met growth expectations, which led to the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. He told GamesIndustry.biz, "The pressure on Xbox is immense: If Call of Duty doesn't make the Game Pass business model work, what possibly can?"
