Steam Player Count Jumps After Patch 8 Launches

Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3) has officially rolled out its long-anticipated final patch, concluding the RPG's remarkable journey. Larian Studios launched BG3's Patch 8 on April 15, 2025, marking the game's last significant update. The conclusive nature of the patch triggered a surge in players, pushing the game just outside Steam's top 10 most-played titles. Previously averaging around 60,000 concurrent players, it has now leaped to over 169,000 at the time of writing.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke addressed the unexpected player growth following Patch 8's release in a Twitter (X) post on April 22. He highlighted that robust modding support allows the team to focus on their "next big project." Earlier reports indicated Larian Studios is moving on from the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) universe to develop an original title.

Consequently, D&D owner Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro will continue the Baldur's Gate series without Larian. They are currently in discussions with other potential partners to identify a studio for a possible Baldur's Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and Additional Features!

Development of the final patch has been underway since its initial announcement in a Steam blog post back in November 2024. This update brings 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and more. The developers have shared a comprehensive breakdown of the patch's contents on the official BG3 website. In comparison to the November 2024 announcement, these patch notes include an expanded list of bug fixes and combat balance tweaks, ensuring the game is polished to their satisfaction.

Larian Studios has invested significant effort into refining BG3, as shown by the extensive fixes and improvements in this final version. They confirm that while this is the last major patch, ongoing support for the modding community will continue.
