Amazon's 'Wheel of Time' Axed After Three Seasons

The Wheel of Time has come to an end on Prime Video, with Amazon canceling the series after Season 3.

According to Deadline, Prime Video decided against renewing The Wheel of Time for a fourth season following what it called "extensive deliberations." While executives reportedly appreciated the series, they couldn't justify its financial viability.

The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan's beloved fantasy book series, starring Rosamund Pike. After two initial seasons that sparked debate among book fans due to controversial departures from the source material, Season 3 won over most of the audience and positioned the show for even greater storytelling ahead.

Fans will find the cancellation especially disappointing given how much of The Wheel of Time's epic narrative remains untold. In many ways, the series was just hitting its stride.

Unfortunately, production costs proved too high for co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios—the latter of which also backs the tremendously expensive Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

As Deadline explained:

...Season 3's overall performance didn't justify the show's expense for Prime Video to proceed with another season, and despite exploring various options and holding discussions with lead studio Sony TV, a renewal wasn't financially feasible.

IGN gave The Wheel of Time Season 3 an 8/10, praising: "The Wheel of Time finally realizes its full potential in Season 3, delivering rich character development set within Robert Jordan’s intricate fantasy universe."

While the TV adaptation has concluded, a 'AAA Open-World RPG' set in the same universe is currently in development. IGN spoke with iwot Studios, which holds The Wheel of Time rights, to learn more about the project.
